Grace Leggans, a Senior of this year’s graduating class at Potosi High School, has been named as the 33rd recipient of the $6000 Marvin Boyer Memorial Scholarship. Grace appears quiet and unassuming. Her humility is sincere, and her modesty is a reflection of her character and the values instilled in her by her mother. If one were to encounter Grace in passing, one would never know the innumerable qualities she carries that helped the Marvin Boyer Scholarship Committee make their choice. She prefers to avoid the spotlight but her record of achievement is hard to hide.

Grace participated in Varsity Girls Tennis, a large number of clubs and activities, including Scholars’ Bowl, delegate to Missouri Girls’ State, and a member of the Ambassadors and the Student Council. She graduated from Mineral Area College with an Associate of Arts Degree before her Potosi High School graduation, as several of the past scholarship recipients have done.

The Boyer Scholarship Committee is very proud to add Grace as their 33rd recipient and knows she will make the Boyer family proud as she continues to strive for excellence in her life and in her academic career at University Missouri, Rolla. She plans on majoring in computer science, as this field captured her imagination as a young girl. Her first memories in this field go back to her kindergarten years. This was when she enjoyed using a laptop for the first time, learning how to use the fingerprint scanner and learning the operating system. Since that point, she has spent countless hours programming computers. She joined the robotics team and went to the state competition for robotics as a programmer. It is something that she has developed an affinity for and looks forward to building a career and future in this area. Grace says, “It’s an exciting field that holds many opportunities and I envision myself in a future of limitless opportunities in software engineering.”

The Marvin Boyer children, Robert Boyer of California; Marvin Boyer, Jr. of Pennsylvania; Rita Boyer Fields of California; and Marguerite Boyer Wilson of Washington, set up this scholarship as a way to honor the memory of their father, Marvin Boyer, who was a local businessman here in Potosi for many years before his death in 1978. He also served on the Potosi R-3 Board of Education from 1953 to 1959 and was very much aware of how important and expensive a college education can be. His children have honored him by setting up a perpetual, charitable trust and each year a committee chosen by the Boyer family, selects a Potosi High School senior, who plans to attend one of the University of Missouri schools, to receive this prestigious scholarship. As of this award, $179,000.00 in scholarships has been given to area young people. The Boyer Family is very proud that their financial assistance is helping local young people get an education.

Grace and her family were honored at a banquet on Saturday evening, May 25th, at the Pasta House in Farmington. The banquet is also paid for by the Boyer Trust, and John Mowery, who chairs the scholarship committee presented the award to Grace at that time. John’s wife, Lou, has served as the Banquet Planner for the last 33 years and does an excellent job, planning a menu that includes 24 oz. rib steaks, stunning table decorations and this year, a beautiful fruit basket for the committee members. Thank you Lou for the outstanding job you do.

Congratulations to Grace from the Boyer family and from all the scholarship committee members. “We know that she will do well in college and will uphold the high traditions of this wonderful scholarship.”
