Newton Maddin Services Conducted In Potosi

Funeral services were conducted last Wednesday, March 30, in Potosi for Newton Maddin, of Blackwell. Mr. Maddin, 85 years old, died Sunday, March 27, at Bonne Terre Hospital.

Mr. Maddin, a son of the late James and Carolyn Maddin, was born March 25, 1875, and was a life-long resident of the Maddin-Richwoods area known as Blackwell. He was engaged in farming until five years ago.

Mr. Maddin was the last remaining member of the Maddin family, being a direct decedent of Thomas Maddin, who served in the Revolutionary War and who owned one of the largest Spanish land grants in the Maddin-Richwoods area.

Seven brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Surviving are four nephews and six nieces - Bill Maddin, Granitet City, Ill.; George Engledow, St. Louis; Bud Edgledow, Blackwell; Jesse Hansford, Coraopolis, Pa.; Mr. Mamie Potashnick, Potosi; Mrs. Ida Cole, Potosi; Mrs. Isabelle Hopkins, Granite City, Ill. and Mrs. Nancy Frances Hartbeyer, Mrs. Mary Evans and Mrs. Carolyn Fish, all of St. Louis area; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Potosi on March 30, with the Rev. O. D. Niswonger, officiating. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery at Blackwell.
