Trojans Post Big Win, 41-14 To Start Varsity Football
September 04, 2024
The Varsity Trojan Football Team held their home opener at Trojan Field on Friday, Aug. 30th, 2024 with kickoff at 7 p.m. The Trojans have a lot of youth across their roster, with Freshman David Miller, #4, starting as quarterback. Noah Walton, #21, is a Junior and Carter Pyatt, #24, is a Sophomore and make a big part of the running back contingent behind the ‘QB’.
There is some experience there on the field and there are some Seniors in the mix as well. Most of the Seniors make up the offensive and defensive lines.
The Trojans welcomed the St. Clair Bulldogs at their home opener. Potosi was quick to get on the scoreboard and put up two touchdowns in the first quarter. Three scores for the Trojans in the second quarter and a final touchdown in the third quarter before the game was called due to lightening in the area.
The scoring, 41-14, at the end of the called game, included five touchdowns by #21 Noah Walton and a touchdown by #58 Ean Eaton, a Senior, after a fumble recovery.
Walton scored first with a 16 yard run, Eaton with a 2 yard rumble after the fumble, Walton with a 10 yard run, Walton with a 20 yard run, Walton with an 11 yard run and then finally a 12 yard run by Walton before the game was called due to lightening.
St. Clair put two scores on the board, both in the second quarter.
#15 Wyatt Cannon, a Junior, had the kicking duties and added 5 extra point conversions, one was no good as a mishandled snap did let Cannon get the kick up.
On the offense for Potosi, #21 Walton had 172 rushing yards on 13 carries and 26 yards receiving. #24 Carter Pyatt had 4 carries for 73 yards.
#4 David Miller attempted 6 passes and had 5 completions. Miller threw 3 times to #2 Thomas Lambing for 31 yards and 2 times to #21 Noah Walton for 26 yards. Miller showed a lot of poise behind center during the offense’s time on the field.
The defense had a good handle of St. Clair and didn’t allow much on their side of the football. #2 Thomas Lambing and #26 Cole Fowler both tallied 8 tackles a piece during the shortened game. #11 Karsen Boyer followed closely in the tackles category with 6 and then #58 Ean Eaton and #7 Jude Litton were next with 4 tackles each.
The Potosi Trojans were rolling well, back on the field in the third quarter. The evening was terribly humid, you could see the moisture in the air in front of the field lights. A breeze came up, the temperature began to drop and everyone at the field was on their phones, looking at radar and talking about what was potentially coming. The referees watched several pops of lightening in the clouds and cleared the field. The standard requirement is 30 minutes after a lightening bolt. The teams were sent to their locker rooms and the fans began to clear the stands.
The clock was at 9:09 left in the third and the discussion was ‘is this a complete game if it’s called?’. Lightening continued to show around the field and the score was Potosi 41 and St. Clair 14. After discussion and watching the weather radar, the decision was made to call the game. The Trojans win.
The decision turned out to be a good one as Potosi quickly got rain, then a ‘gully washer’ that had roads covered with water. The Trojans got the win, and leave a few questions as to what might have happened with the Trojan offense? Noah Walton was headed toward the 200 yard plateau in rushing and there were others would probably have gotten some good playing time.
This week the Trojans venture to Salem. The Salem Tigers dropped their opener on the road at St. James, 28-0.
