Valley FFA HELD Farm Work Day GETTING READY FOR SPRING SEASON
Valley R-VI School Future Farmers of America sponsor and instructor Marty Yount submitted the following report for the Vikings F.F.A.
“Valley-R6 had a wonderful school farm work day on Friday, November 15th. Students along with several community members worked to improve the quality of our school farm along with the appearance of our preschool.”
Yount reported that twenty-five people used machinery and hand tools to help improve the outdoor educational facility.
He said, “We had amazing help, with ages from nine years old all the way to ninety! Ninety year old Mr. Donald Akers asked when our next farm work day was because he wanted to be involved. He helped with spraying tordon on locust trees after others cut them down with loppers and chainsaws. We had some of the school staff help as well. Dr. Silvy, our superintendent, was cutting down locust trees and anything else we needed help on.”
He continued, “Mr. Middleton, our high school principal, was driving the tractor to move rock and remove old fences. I was very excited because this event had the most people involved together at one time that we’ve had, along with the most work done on the school farm in a single day. We removed some of the old fences. A small amount of revenue was actually made by scraping fences and other old metal from the property. The skid steers were a huge help because they allowed for a three day job to be done in three hours.”
The skidsteers that were loaned to the Valley F.F.A. for the day belonged to Michael and Brent McClain and Justin and Mike Sadler.
Yount said, “We would not have gotten half the work done without their help running and loaning those pieces of equipment. “
“There was a lot of hard work accomplished and we can’t wait for the next farm work day. Students and community members hope to get even more work done next time!” said Marty Yount, Advisor.
The Valley F.F.A. Chapter is looking forward to Spring and getting back to work on projects on the farm.
