MARVIN BOYER SCHOLARSHIP TO ZACHARIAH PALMIER – The Thirty-Fifth recipient of the $6,000 Marvin Boyer Memorial Scholarship given each Spring is Zachariah Palmier, a Class of 2021 P.H.S.

Zachariah Palmier, a Senior of the 2021 graduating class at Potosi High School, has been named the 35th recipient of the $6000 Marvin Boyer Memorial Scholarship. Zach is the son of Jeannie and D.J. Hart of Potosi.

To date, $191,000.00 has been awarded to Potosi seniors to further their education at one of the four Missouri State Universities.

Zach has chosen to attend the University of Missouri Scient and Technology in Rolla.

By taking dual credit classes at Potosi, Zach had already earned 30 hours of college credit before his high school graduation.

His other achievements include three Academic Medals of Excellence, 1st Place in Southeast Missouri’s Computer Science competition, multiple exhibits in the Mineral Area art festival, won third place in the V.F.W. High School Essay Contest, is a member of the National Honor Society, and, was a Vacation Bible School Counselor, and worked in the Well of Hope Ministry, his church’s outreach program.

Zach is the 16th recipient to receive the $6000.00 scholarship, which was increased from $5000.00 19 years ago by the generous Boyer Perpethual, charitable trust, to account for the increase costs of a college education.

“The Boyer Scholarship Committee is very proud to add Zach as their 35th recipient and we know he will make the Boyer Family proud as she continues to strive for excellence in his life and in his academic career at University Missouri, Rolla,” said Committee Chair John Mowry.

The Marvin Boyer children, Robert Boyer of California, Marvin Boyer, Jr., of Pennsylvania, Rita Boyer Fields of California and Marguerite Boyer Wilson of Washington, set up this scholarship as a way to honor the memory of their father, Marvin Boyer, who was a local businessman here in Potosi for many years before his death in 1978. He also served on the Potosi R-3 Board of Education from 1953 to 1959 and was very much aware of how important and expensive a college education can be.

His children have honored him by setting up this perpetual, charitable trust in his honor and each year a committee chosen by the Boyer Family, selects a Potosi High School Senior, who plans to attend one of the University of Missouri schools, to receive this prestigious scholarship. The Boyer Family is very proud that their financial assistance has been helping local young people get a good foundation to help start their education with this financial assistance.

Zach and his family were honored at a Banquet on Saturday evening, April 24th, at the Pasta House in Farmington. The Banquet is also paid for by the Boyer Trust, and John Mowry, who chairs the scholarship committee presented the award to Zach at that time. John’s wife, Lou, has served as the Banquet Planner for the last 35 years and does an excellent job, planning a menu that includes 24 oz. rib steaks and stunning table decorations. Thank you Lou, for the outstanding job you do every year, and this year Lou was assisted by two former Potosi graduates, special guests, Lindsey and Eric Johnson. Robert Boyer, who set up the trust, was also honored for reaching his 90th birthday. He owns multiple convenience stores in San Diego and Las Vegas.

What a wonderful way for this family to honor their father by ‘paying it forward’.

“Congratulations to Zach from the Boyer Family and from all the scholarship committee. We know that he will do well in college and will uphold the high traditions of this wonderful scholarship, and we sincerely thank him for his thoughtfulness,” Mowry concluded.

Mowry noted that this was the first time in 35 years the recipient presented a ‘thank you’ gift to the committee members.
